this one goes out to the Sonter sisters for the many fond memories I have of us gleefully pointing and laughing at David Bowie’s very tight pants (on more than one occasion).

Whenever I hear the word ‘iTablet’, I involuntarily recall how, as a child, I would be called upon to hide a large blue pill in our cat Dougal’s dinner, in an attempt to clear up his recurrent conjunctivitis. ‘Don’t forget his eye tablet,’ Mum would say, but Dougal was always one step ahead. At meal’s end, his half of the orange plastic double bowl would be licked spotless, save for a single slimy eye tablet.

My boss just came into work, and decided to cool off in the cold room in the lab (a delicious 4 degrees celsius). Whilst leaning against the wall, having a chat to an employee, he accidentally pushed the emergency escape button. Security were called, and were not amused.

it’s so humid in Brisbane today, there is condensation forming on the outside of the windows. it’s going to be a scorcher too, and not a cloud in the sky. this weather makes me want to cry.

also, I had a dream last night where some random child came up to me and told me I had a coarse mouth. I am going to try not to swear anymore.

my perfect Valentine's day.

  • Liz: I will spend half the day in twilight sleep and then I will go home to watch the Lifetime movie 'My Stepson Is My Cyber-Husband.'
  • Jack: That's inspired. You truly are the Picasso of loneliness.

I'm a bad person.

The girl who sits in the office cubicle next to mine, she’s really young and sweet and chirpy and lovely… this morning she came in all excited and bursting to tell someone her news, and sadly for her I was the only person around. Her news was that her boyfriend proposed yesterday (on valentine’s day - vomit sound).

Firstly, I was shocked because she seems so young. So I immediately (and rather rudely, in hindsight) asked her how old she is.

“24.”

“Oh, so young!” I replied.

I felt the need to say something affirmative and congratulatory, but the words came out before I could stop them:

“Good luck!”

Dani, I am sorry for my cold black heart. You deserve every happiness. Just not where I can witness it.

And fuck you, valentine’s day.

nano-art

Wow! Coming from something of a background in nanotechnology, I was amazed to read this story about Kate Nichols, a classically trained artist who is now the first artist in residence in Paul Alivisatos’ nanotech lab at Berkeley. She’s also a TED lecturer.

Her goal is to recreate the brilliant blue of the Morpho butterfly, and she is trying to achieve this using nano materials… great stuff. It makes me so happy to know that we live in a world of freedom where we can let our imagination go wild, and pair up such incongruous fields as hard science and art.
